Calamus Pond Cemetery
In September 2004, my Aunt Lola and I visited the Calamus Pond Cemetery. It is on private land less than a mile from the Eastern Shawnee tribal grounds in Seneca, Missouri. In particular, this land was part of the allotments granted to members of the Eastern Shawnee tribe. It is close the allotment of my great-great grandmother, Cora Jackson Hampton (wife of Corn Hampton).
There is a listing of those who are buried in the Calamus Pond Cemetery, and it can be found here. Of those buried there, Cora is my great-great grandmother. Annie Jackson and John Jackson are Cora’s parents. Ke-ne-fe-ase Jackson is John Jackson’s mother. Stonewall Jackson was an adopted member of Ke-ne-fe-ase’s family. Our family is also related to the Deshanes/Dushanes, Daughtertys and Prophets.
Sadly, the cemetery is not in a good state. Many of the headstones have fallen over and it is within a pasture. While there is a fence around the graves, it is just barbed wire which doesn’t keep the animals out. We were unable to find the gravestone for Cora, though my Aunt remembers seeing it the last time she was there. We will hopefully be able to improve the cemetery, through putting up a new fence and righting the headstones.
