Visit to Grove
In September 2004, my Aunt Lola and I visited Olympus Cemetery in Grove, OK to research our Hampton line. What drew us there is my great-great grandfather, Corn Hampton. We have seen him referenced as Alfred Corn Hampton or Corn Hampton, and heard him referred to also as Alfred Cornelius Hampton.
In some papers that my Aunt had, there is a set of papers that are listed as being from the bible of Henry Harvey Hampton. Listed within those papers is an Alfred Corn Hampton, and H. H. Hampton had a son named A. C. Hampton. Also, on census records for my great-grandfather, Bill Hampton, son of Corn Hampton, it lists that his father (Corn) is from North Carolina. H. H. Hampton’s family moved from North Carolina to Grove. We are still trying to figure out if this Alfred Corn Hampton, son of H. H. Hampton, is “our” Corn Hampton.
The reason that we thought this might be ours, is both because of the bible papers, but also because of a reference we found online in which an obituary mentioned Corn Hampton. We tracked down a copy of the obituary (see it here) and it said, “She attended the burial of the first person laid to rest in Olympus cemetery, namely the wife of Corn Hampton, a brother of Mrs. W. H. Doherty, Laura J. Fields and Miss Addie Hampton.” Because of this, we spent a good amount of time exploring and visiting the Olympus cemetery. The oldest burial we could find there was that of a child, so sadly we didn’t find reference to who might have been his wife. However, we did take a good number of pictures, and I have shared them below.
